The Golden Compass is Great – Atonement is Not

Saw 2 movies this weekend: Atonement and The Golden Compass

Atonement has lots of hype. I read comments like, “This is one of the year’s best films, a certain best picture nominee.” (from Ebert) on Friday and was really excited to go see it. I left the theater disappointed. The first half is great – it’s a great setup. The set of circumstances that destroy the lives of the 3 main characters is done extremely well and it’s very fun to watch. However, once the *main event* happens, there’s about an hour of crap.  We see McEvoy and Knightly’s lives go down.  There’s very little dialogue – just the two of them in different locations feeling miserable for 60 minutes.  I like the concept of the movie and the cinematography is incredible, but i just didn’t feel it.  Don’t believe the hype

The Golden Compass on the other hand is amazing. It’s a fairy tale similar to Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia.  I thought Naria was horrible but have always found the Potter movies to be pretty good.  The Golden Compass is easily as good as the Potter films if not better. I wasn’t as familiar with Compass so i was pleasantly surprised with the plot and the story. I love the concept of each person having a daemon representing your soul in the shape of an animal.  It adds an entirely other element to all conflict and interaction and makes it much more fun to watch.  I thought the story was captivating and the characters were all impressive to watch: the polar bear was awesome, Nicole Kidman was very hot and just as creepy, and the main british girl was GREAT.  I’d recommend you check it out.

kanagaroo.jpgThe entire time i was trying to think which animal my soul would be – i’m still not sure but i’m leaning towards a kangaroo.

The Strike goes on..

I found (from VSL) some really funny short videos have been made by the writers and directors that are out of commission due to the strike.

One episode has a room full of actors (Martin Sheen, Demi Moore, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, etc.) try to audition for a movie when the script is completely blank.  I really like episode 16 where Patricia Clarkson and Amy Ryan are literally acting out ads from the phone book.

There’s also an episode 18 where a guy picks up a phone to check on movie times and gets this recording…

Hello and welcome to Moviefone

They’re pretty good.  Check ’em out

I'm a lebowski book lover

Last month, I read the book I’m a Lebowski, You’re a Lebowski: Life, The Big Lebowski, and What-Have-You and have to say that it is pretty fantastic.

There are interviews with many of the actors in the movie. All of them said how professional and awesome the Coen brothers were. Apparently the brothers showed up to the set knowing exactly how the movie will look and be. They only disagreed on one item – the look on Jeff Bridges face in the dream sequence when he’s going through the legs of the ladies on the bowling alley. Apparently, Ethan wanted a smile and Joel thought he should look scared. That’s the only disagreement they had. Pretty incredible. The book really makes you appreciate how good they are. They wrote the script, the casted the film and basically all the awesomeness that is Lebowski came straight from their brains. Of course, the book also tells you where they got the stories that fill the movie and discusses some theories about why so many people love it.

If you like the movie, this is a great pickup and read. Both my brother and i cruised through it and i could see it living in the bathrooms of many men for many years to come

Wes Anderson's short film

The new Wes Anderson film, Dearjeeling, just hit the theaters and although i LOVE Rushmore, i’m starting to get sick of the same old kooky formula Wes keeps giving us. I’ll definitely go see the new movie, but i’m not expecting much as his films have gotten progressively worse. Bottle Rocket and Rushmore were great and i thought i was going to be a lifelong fan. Royal Tennebaums was good but it had too many characters with none of them being really developed and it didn’t have the heart of Rushmore. A Life Aquatic was just a mess and definitely the least original and entertaining. So, my expectations are low for Darjeeling.

One thing that i just watched is that a short film prequel to the upcoming movie. It’s called Hotel Chevalier and it takes takes place in a lavish Parisian hotel room filled with typical Andersonian colors and quirky details (and i hear the Marc Jacobs suitcase play a major role in Darjeeling). The film stars Jason Schwartzman (shocker) and Natalie Portman and watches them fumble through the end of an awkward relationship. I love Natalie and she definitely delivers. The short film is free on iTunes (click HERE) and worth checking out.

3:10 to Yuma is a good Western

I saw 3:10 to Yuma this weekend. It is good. I’m not sure if it’s better than Unforgiven or the classic westerns, but it’s pretty damn solid. On par in its genre to Bourne Ultimatum.

3:10 to Yuma, stars Christian Bale and Russell Crowe in an old-school style Western drama. Both are are great (i mean it is the Alpha Bale), the supporting characters are right on the money, and i can’t think of one scene that doesn’t work.

Some quick thoughts:

  • Gretchen Mol, who plays Bale’s wife, is always a total bitch in her movies. From Rounders to this, she’s always a total wet blanket.
  • Bale and Crowe have some good chemistry. Crowe is one of the smartest cowboys i’ve ever seen and he seems so happy to have finally met someone like Bale, someone who is worthy of his conversation.
  • The guy who plays Crowe’s second in command, Charlie, is terrific (played by Ben Foster). He crushes every scene. He was Angel in X-Men and was just so-so and didn’t really prepare me for this super-duper performance. He was great.
  • The final scene did not play out as i had planned. I was waiting for Bale to get a bunch of guns and tear some shit down. Instead he just moronically made a run for it. While it worked, it caught me by surprise. I think I’ve been conditioned by film like The Matrix, Bourne, and others to anticipate a superhuman performance at the end of a film. I was pleasantly surprised to see something different

The Dixie Chicks Documentary is Good

Just watched an interesting documentary about the Dixie Chicks. While about their music, it also shows the insane ignorance of americans and how the group really stood up for what they believed in when the entire industry was out to ruin them. Granted, it helped that their music was really good. I had never really listened to their stuff, but you don’t need to for the film. It delivers even if you’re not a fan.

What started a half-jokingly comment about Bush and the Iraqi war at a concert in the UK turned into pure hatred by the Right Wing. What the lead singer said was, “I’m ashamed the President is from Texas” was picked up on the AP wire and the media went nuts. The Dixie Chicks were targeted as representing everything that was anti-Bush. As a result, Clearchannel banned all their music from the radio, there were CD destroying rallies and the fanatical portion of the group sent them death threats so they couldn’t even tour. In the film, there are interviews of mothers teaching their daughters to say “i hate the Dixie Chicks.” It is incredible what happened. The Dixie Chicks are country music singers – in America – and to see the ignorance and hatred of other Americans towards them was incredible.

The highlight of the film came when the Dixie Chicks go back to the studio and make the song “Not Ready to Make Nice.” There’s a story of a band member who wrote a song called “Undivided” The lead singer (Natalie) asks: “Does that mean we would have to forgive all those people that did that to us?” He says, “Well, for the sake of the song, maybe it would.” Natalie, flinging a dismissive hand in the air, says, “Nope.” and she instead proceeds to record the title track of their platinum record. It’s called “Not Ready to Make Nice” and you can feel the emotion when they sing it. Their lives were destroyed – they were banned from the industry that they dominated b/c of their disagreement with the way. The lyrics to Not Ready:

it’s a sad sad story
when a mother will teach her
daughter that she ought to
hate a perfect stranger

how in the world can the words that i said
send somebody over the edge
that they’d write me a letter
saying i better
shut up and sing
or my life will be over

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still made as hell
and don’t have time to go round and round and round

One of the Chicks commented on how this song brought her to tears for over 6 months every time she heard the song – and I believe it. These girls went through some tough shit. No country radio station would play their music for over 3 years and yet over an 8 year period, they were Sony/BMG’s top selling artist. The movie is a captivating story of a music group’s combat against traditional media and politics while at the same time keeping it real and producing really great music.

Transformers is Good, But I Have Some Thoughts

I went and saw Transformers last night with the rest of the hard-core geeks. My quick thoughts:

  • Going to see a movie on opening day truly enhances the movie going experience. I went to see Star Wars Episode I and having people yelling at the screen, applauding at awesome fight sequences, and booing cheesy lines makes the movie much more entertaining. Similarly, last night people were clapping at cool parts and cheering the Autobots victories. It makes a difference.
  • Megatron as a toy was always a gun but in the movie he is a fighter jet. I don’t know why they did this. Another Decepticon is a plane too – so it sort of sucked having Megatron one as well.
  • The musical score was very similar to the music in The Rock (a great Michael Bay film). The entire time whenever the music began all i could thing about was The Rock. The Rock is a better movie than Transformers because Cage/Connery is a better combo than LaBeouf/Bumblebee and the plot of Rock is much much better
  • Speaking of the plot. I had some problems with it.
    • The whole point of the movie was to see who could get “The Cube” first. To Autobots got hold of the Cube first (wahoo!) but apparently they had no idea of what to do with it once they got it. Their plan was to drive into a city and just hang out there. That doesn’t make sense.
    • Then when the Decepticons are coming to get the Cube, the genius plan is to give the Cube to LaBeouf and have him go to the roof of a building to give the Cube to some US Military helicopters. This would be a good idea except that all the Decepticons are also fighter jets. Don’t you think they’d be able to stop that?
    • Throughout the entire movie, they made it pretty obvious that human weapons don’t do anything to the Transformers. However, they keep trying to kill them by constantly shooting them with army rifles. Again, wtf? Are humans just morons?
  • All Michael Bay movies are edited so that the fight scenes are so fast, you can’t really tell what’s happening. There are a few Optimus Prime fights and i have no idea what happens in these fights. When the cuts are so fast, things look cool but you can’t tell what’s going on. For instance, i know the Prime has some sort of sword-like item, and i know that he kills some guys with it. But i’m not sure exactly what happens and that sucks.
  • LaBeouf has good timing and the scenes with his family are pretty entertaining. The movie is pretty funny. LaBeouf makes the movie work. I’m excited to see him in Indiana Jones 4.
  • Megan Fox (the token hot chick) is SMOKIN’ HOT. She plays a very similar role to Tea Leoni from Bad Boys (another Bay film) but she is much hotter. Seriously, she look good.
  • There are two supporting roles that made the movie infinitely more enjoyable: John Turturro and the super hot Australian computer hacker chick (Rachel Taylor). I was a computer science major in college and have worked in the internet industry for 9 years and have never seen a chick this hot. And the accent puts her over the top. Great work all around. And Turturro, as always, is just great.

But, is the movie good? Basically, if you liked Independence Day (with Will Smith), you’ll like this. They’re very similar and provided the same level of enjoyment for me. They’re both funny and with a like-able lead character. They both have earth being invaded by alien beings and show the process of the military trying to figure out what they hell is going on.

It’s not the best Michael Bay film – that would be The Rock – but it’s not the worst. I think it’s probably the best after The Rock and Bad Boys.

Required Reading Before Seeing Pirates of Caribbean 3

Maybe i was the only one completely confused by what was going on in Pirates of the Caribbean 3 because i had forgotten so much about what happened in the first or second films. Thus, i decided to put together this little crib sheet of who did what in the past movies. If you know these facts, the current film will be MUCH more enjoyable…

Elizabeth Swann

In the first and 2nd movies the super-hot Kiera Knightly is the daughter of Weatherby Swann, the Governor of Port Royal, a British base in the Caribbean, and seems destined to marry a bland british dude.  At the age of 12 she removes a key from a shipwrecked Will Turner (protecting him from being accused of piracy).  Today, at the age of 20, in Port Royal, she is kidnapped by the pirate Barbossa because it is believed her blood can free Barbossa and his crew from the curse of the Black Pearl.  And she truly loves the young swordsmith Will Turner.  Her boyfriend Will, with the help of Jack Sparrow track her down, rescue her, release the curse and then kill Barbossa, and then return home.

Once home she’s about to get married to Will and is instead arrested for helping Captain Jack. However, their lives will be spared if Will can find Captain Jack and take possession of a the special compass.  Escaping from jail, she travels the seas and finds Jack in another port and learns of Davy Jones’ capture of Will (thanks to Jack).  Jack also reveals the his compass’ secret to Elizabeth; it points to what the holder wants most in the world. When he convinces her that she can save Will by finding the chest containing Davy Jones’ heart, she gets a bearing towards it. Once the ship is underway, tension arises between Jack and Elizabeth when each discovers the compass now points to the other.  They eventually find the heart but the British gain possession of it.   As they leave the island, their ship is attacked by the Kraken.  Realizing the Kraken is only hunting Jack, Elizabeth slyly kisses him while handcuffing him to the mast. Racked with guilt over her deceit, she tells the others Jack chose to remain behind, unaware Will witnessed the scene and now believes she loves Sparrow.

Captain Jack Sparrow

We first see him stranded on an island and learn that he has a deep hatred for Capt. Barbossa (Rush), who led a mutiny aboard Sparrow’s ship, The Black Pearl.  Seeking revenge, Jack steals a ship and finds a new crew of his own, including Will Turner, to pursue Barbossa. With the help of Elizabeth and Will, he both releases the Barbossa’s curse and then kills him.  After killing Barbossa, he escapes the island and is shortly after captured and taken hostage by cannibals on a remote island.

13 years before this all happened, Jack made a deal with Davy Jones that if Jones resurrected the Black Pearl and made Jack its captain, Jack would then serve about Jones’ ship (The Flying Dutchman) for 100 years.  Not wanting to do this, Jack then begins to look for the Dead Man’s Chest which contains Davy Jones’ beating heart. When the pain of lost love became too much to bear, Jones carved the heart from his chest, burying it in a secret location. Whoever possesses the heart controls Davy Jones, thereby controlling the world’s oceans.  Back at sea, the Flying Dutchman encounters Sparrow, who deviously attempts to barter Will in exchange for himself. But Jones demands 100 souls in 3 days and takes Will as collateral.  So, Jack finds Elizabeth and uses her with the compass to find & get Davy’s heart (and save Will in the process).  They find the heart but ultimately lose it to the British.  The Pearl is then found by Jones and attacked by The Kraken. Jack gives the order to abandon ship before the Kraken makes its final assault. ‎Realizing the Kraken is only hunting Jack, a deceptive Elizabeth passionately kisses him while handcuffing him to the mast. Jack bravely charges the Kraken, but the colossal beast drags him and the Pearl to a watery grave. Watching from his ship, Davy Jones declares their debt settled.

Will and Bill “Bootstrap” Turner

Will is a young swordsmith in Port Royal. His dad, “Bootstrap Bill” was a pirate on the Black Pearl with Jack Sparrow and Barbossa. As pirates they stole a chest of gold and spent it. This brought on a curse that left all of them as Undead until each coin and a drop of blood from each pirate is placed back into the chest. After Barbossa abandoned Jack, Bill complained so Barbossa killed him.  Before Bootstap Bill died he gave one of his pieces of gold (the medallion) to Will.  Jack figured this out brought Will to Barbossa as his blood could be used in lieu of Bill’s.  Will manages to wriggle out of the trap and returns his medallion and gives his blood only after Barbassa has been shot, so he the curse will be released, he will be mortal and thus actually die.  Will then returns home with his true love, Elizabeth.

Once home he’s about to get married and is instead arrested for helping Jack. The British bastards will spare his (and Elizabeth’s) life if he can find Captain Jack and take possession of Jack’s special compass.  While looking for Jack he learns that his father is on the boat of Davy Jones. Will succeeds in finding Jack but Jack attempts to trade him to Davy Jones in exchange for Jack’s 100 year servitude. Instead, Jones takes Will as a hostage until Jack returns in 3 days with 100 souls. Will escapes from the Dutchman with help from his father, and arrives on the island containing Davy’s heart with the key to the chest (containing the heart) that he stole from Davy Jones. Will wants to stab the heart to free his father, but a three-way duel erupts instead and the British get the heart.  Will then escapes on the Black Pearl.  But Jones is chasing the Pearl to get Jack Sparrow. As the Kraken is attacking The Pearl, a deceptive Elizabeth passionately kisses Jack while handcuffing him to the mast. She tells the others Jack chose to remain behind, but Will witnesses the scene and now believes she loves Sparrow.

Barbossa

He and the crew of The Black Pearl stole a chest of ancient gold.  He first led a mutiny aboard The Black Pearl and leaves Jack on a deserted island.  It turns out the gold is cursed and it turned the entire crew into the Undead. By day they look like normal if dissolute humans, but by the light of the moon, they’re revealed as skeletal cadavers. Because they’re already dead, they cannot be killed (however they continue to fight people throughout all of the first film – don’t ask me why). To reverse the curse, they need to place all the coins back and a drop of blood from each pirate into the Dead Man’s Chest.  Bill Turner is already dead, but Elizabeth says her last name is turns so Barbossa kidnaps her.  Barbossa tries to use Elizabeth, but Will rescues her.  Jack then informs Barbossa who Will is and during the fighting Will and Jack end up killing Barbossa.

Davy Jones

Cursed to roam the sea for centuries, Jones has a serious score to settle with ol’ Jack Sparrow — and he has a pretty nifty arsenal at his disposal. In addition to his undead ghost ship and a bunch of amazingly nasty sidekicks, Jones keeps a multi-tentacled water pet which can engulf any ship on in a spectacular fashion.   Jones was once in love with a woman but she was lost to him.  Because this pain of lost love became too much to bear, he carved the heart from his chest, and buried it in a secret location. Whoever possesses the heart controls Davy Jones, thereby controlling the world’s oceans.  Jack wants to control the heart so he doesn’t have to spend 100 years on the Flying Dutchman.  But, the heart falls into the hands of the British and Jones chases down Jack.  Not able to take over The Pearl, he summons the Kraken who takes Jack down to the depths of the ocean.

There are some other characters, but knowing these should get your through the 3rd installment.  Enjoy….
